Our Story
A Little Wild was created by us! Two Mamas, Rebecca and Sarah, who love free play as much as we love the natural world. We first met at Playcentre – an early childhood alternative where you play and learn alongside your child, with a beautiful philosophy that child-led, free play is the most holistic and natural way for children to learn and explore their world. In our own homes, we had both separately started the journey toward zero-waste, trying to minimize the impact our decisions had on the planet. After a particularly extravagant four year old sticker session by one of Sarah’s children, we started talking about our struggle to balance our desire to provide our children with free, open and joyful play experiences, with the fact that many of these play experiences created a huge amount of waste. Once we realized that we were travelling the same path, wanting to find ways to have fun with our children while being kind to Mother Earth, A Little Wild took flight.
A Little Wild is founded on a few principles:
It’s about joy. We source beautiful, natural play items that encourage open and joyful play and learning in children. This means a curated range of play and learning items that allow your kids to openly explore their environment and creativity.
It’s about taking care. We strive to minimize waste wherever we can. That means no plastic wherever possible, using sustainable packaging materials, buying bulk to reduce transport miles and shopping local. Our range is completely non-toxic, ensuring all of these fun experiences you’re creating are also keeping you safe! Read more about our efforts toward sustainability here
We support local. We’ve worked really hard to find beautiful play items from crafty and clever kiwis as we love local businesses and their hard work and creativity. We believe true sustainability comes from supporting your local economy. Occasionally we’ve crossed the ditch in our efforts to find some key items that we absolutely love. Our stockists are small, homegrown, family businesses and we are thrilled to share their stories with you here
